Maggie Alberg went to the Westoe Secondary School from 1916 to 1922, following which she went to Armstrong College, Newcastle (University of Durham) where in 1925 she was awarded a 3rd class BA in French and Latin. She stayed on a further year to gain her Scondary Teacher's Diploma in the Theory and Practice of Teaching, and her Board of Education Teacher's Certificate.

Studying languages as she was, she spend some 14 months of her graduate studies in various universiities in France, including 6 months at the University of Grenoble.

Armed with her qualifications she returned to her old school as a temporary teacher for the 1926/7 academic year, and in September 1927 she joined the staff full time, including through its restructuring to the Girls' High School.

She left the Girls' school in 1938, and three years later, in 1941, she joined the staff of the Boys' High School where she stayed until summer, 1947, when she returned to teach at the High School for Girls.
