The Admission Register
When the Boys Public Day School Company established the Boys High School in South Shields, they kept an Admission Register of all boys admitted to the school from its foundation in 1885 until January 1909, when the school was taken over by the local Education Authority, and a difference set of registers was started.

Only 47 double-pages of the 115 in the register were actually used for admissions.

The War
So what has this got to do with the First World War?

Well, it looks as though they had been looking around for somewhere to make informal notes on those who served in the war, and perhaps someone though that all those unused pages in the register would be a good place to make them.

So it was that 26 half-pages were used to record those details, including identifying those who were killed, injured, taken prisoner and given awards.

These digital copies were originally intended for creating the transcription, and so are of "working quality". However, I've included reduced versions just to show what they were like. The transcription itself was one source used to create the list of those from the school who served.

In places, the writing is very difficult to make out, and I'm sure that the records are not exhaustive.
