There is no direct evidence that the details here refer to the same Edgar Atheling Hastie who went to Westoe Secondary School, but the relatively unusual name suggests that it is likely.

Edgar Atheling Hastie was the son of mariner, George Nelson Hastie, and his wife, Emma.

He was the second son of the same name, ther first had died in 1895, only one year old.

It is not known when Edgar attended Westoe Secondary School, but it is likely that he was still a pupil at the outbreak of war.

He followed his father and became a mariner, and served with the SS Taplow as an apprentice.

On 5-Jun-1917, the Taplow (a steamer) sailed from Huelva, in southern Spain, bound for Port Talbot. In July, she was reported as "very much overdue", and on 1-Aug-1917 was formally listed with Lloyds as missing.

Edgar, aged only 16, and the rest of the crew were presumed drowned, and are remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial in north London.
